For dogs with mobility problems, particularly dogs who have been diagnosed with canine osteoarthritis, these type of days more commonly occur when the weather is colder. Having slept for several hours, our dog’s joints can be somewhat like a labouring car engine – in other words, they work better when they’ve been warmed up.

Rehabilitation specialist and ‘A Walk in the Park’ expert, David Prydie offers his advice commenting:

“The cold weather can affect your dog’s arthritis, making it difficult to get out and exercise, leading to greater pain and discomfort.

Consider the use of a coat for your dog in winter if appropriate and ensure that you always allow time to warm up with stretches. Also, shorten the length of walks to make it easier when exercising the dog.

Speak to your veterinarian for further guidance and advice as needed.”

It’s wise to be aware that the weather can indeed have an impact on the mobility of an arthritic dog and as such, allowing the dog the opportunity to have a nice stretch and to warm up his or her joints prior to be taken for a walk or being allowed to engage in any kind of moderate exercise will help protect them from aggravating their condition.

Cold weather can add to the stiffness of joints and during such cold times your dog will benefit from a gentle muscle massage. A gentle movement of the joints by moving its limbs can help to increase the blood circulation and thus reduce the stiffness of the joints that causes the arthritic pain.

You might also consider choosing a heated bed, especially when the weather is cold or damp. This will have great added benefits when your dog is sleeping on a well padded, warm bed.
